Slaughtered Dog
Case Offers $6400 Reward
One of the goals of dog adoption and dog rescue is to educate people everywhere about the importance of humane treatment
of all dogs, not just those that have had a successful dog rescue or dog adoption.
A story reported in The Western Star
demonstrates the desperate need for community and
legislative action, detailing one of the “most extreme (dog) cruelty cases ever
seen.”
The remains of a 2 year old tortured dog were autopsied after
being discovered along the side of a road. The veterinarian who performed the dog autopsy said that
the dog had been boiled alive in oil or water then skinned.
The Humane Society of
the United States ( HSUS) other dog and animal welfare organizations and private individuals are
offering the reward.
It is hoped that the reward will lure information from someone who
has information.
Reports are that the dog was cut on the legs and neck and a wire was found on a rear leg that may have been
utilized to string the dog up.
Why Dog Abuse Has Been Historically Tolerated by Law
For most of
civilized history, dogs have few or no legal protections against abuse. It was only during the 20th century that child labor
laws restricted the number of hours and working conditions that children could be subjected
to. So it is
not hard to understand the historical lack of action by legislatures and local communities to protect dogs from
abuse.
Thankfully that
is starting to change. States are starting to enact legislation for the protection of dogs against
abuse. Every state has enacted some form of legislation protecting dogs from cruelty and neglect. Yet there is much room for improvement.
Some states such as
Hawaii, Idaho,
Kentucky, North
Dakota and Utah have no felony animal cruelty
law.
Other states have made much better headway and
enacted laws with stronger provisions prohibiting cruelty against dogs such as California, Michigan, Illinois, Oregon and Maine.
A dog which
has been adopted from a dog shelter or dog pound is not just a throw away dog, but a feeling sentient being that deserves protection and has
certain inalienable rights.
We hope that
this case gets the national attention it deserves ands that it serves as one more flagship case in the cause against cruelty to
dogs.
