Chicken Jerky Danger for Dogs

Chicken Jerky Danger for Dogs

Having witnessed the pain of local dog guardians whose beloved
dogs suffered during the massive dog food recall a few years ago,
I felt compelled to report on a new and potentially dangerous issue
of similar characteristics so that we can all take precaution against
potential unnecessary tragedy.

The FDA announced in late 2011 that chicken jerky treats, popular
with dogs and many dog guardians alike have emerged as a DANGER,
reminiscent of the dog food recall a few years ago where melamine,
(used to produce plastic products) was discovered in China sourced
ingredients, causing kidney failure and death in dogs.

According to the FDA website www.fda.gov derived in excerpts

“..chicken jerky products (also marketed as chicken tenders,
strips or treats) may be associated with serious illness in dogs.

Over the past 12 months, the FDA has observed an increase in the
number of complaints regarding canine illnesses associated with
consumption of chicken jerky products imported from China.

These complaints have been reported to the government by both dog
owners and veterinarians…….

So, beware of signs of potential kidney failure if you notice any
of these symptoms after Fido eats chicken jerky treats……

-Decreased appetite
-Decreased activity
-Vomiting
-Diarrhea (sometimes with blood)
-Increased water consumption
-Increased urination

Blood tests may indicate kidney failure. And urine tests may show
Fanconi syndrome (increased blood sugar). Although most dogs are
likely to recover, some deaths have been reported.
What You Should Do

If your dog shows any of these signs, the FDA urges consumers to
stop feeding the suspected products immediately.”
end FDA.gov information

Dog guardians should contact a veterinarian IMMEDIATELY if signs or
symptoms are present.

Now the problem has matured to a the filing of a class action
lawsuit. In reports we have read including a synopsis forwarded to
us by one of our subscribers, the suit was filed with regard to
Waggin’ Train products popular in many pet and box stores….

Here’s a few excerpts from and reported by LawyerandSettlements.com

“Nestlé Purina…Faces Class Action over Alleged Lethal Dog Treats
Chicago, IL: A $5 million…..class-action lawsuit has been filed
against Nestlé Purina Petcare Co, alleging the company’s Waggin’
Train Yam Good chicken-wrapped treats causes kidney failure in
dogs.

The lawsuit, filed by Dennis Adkins from Illinois, claims his
9-year-old Pomeranian dog became sick and died from kidney failure
three days after eating Waggin’ Train Yam Good chicken-wrapped
treats. ……Walmart, where the dog treats were sold, is also a
defendant in the lawsuit. ” END http://tinyurl.com/6o76mbq

In our opinion the best approach is to STOP feeding any treats
manufactured in China.

As we wrote in a previous edition…For less than $50, you can buy
a dehydrator at almost any retailer and prepare economical and
healthy treats at home. This is our preferred choice and our
finicky little Chihuahuas love their chicken treats!

And remember that diet is just part of the healthy pooch
puzzle…what Fido really needs and wants is time to be outdoors
playing with you, and other dogs for a “pack friendly” healthy good
time.
